Washing Advice

Oilskin jackets are a fantastic way to stay warm & dry in wet weather and caring for your oilskin properly will keep it in good condition for years to come.

Here are some tips for caring for your oilskin jacket:

If your jacket gets dirty, brush it off with a stiff brush or sponge.

Don’t wash your jacket / coat with hot water or detergent. This will remove the oils and waxes that make your jacket waterproof. Instead, spot-clean your jacket with a damp cloth or sponge. If your jacket is really dirty, you can rinse it in a tub of cold water or hose off outside while hanging.

If your jacket gets wet, hang it up to dry as soon as possible. Air dry your item, do not wring it out or put it in the dryer.

If you choose to wash it with detergent, rinse your jacket thoroughly and be aware that you will now need to reproof your jacket.

Store your jacket in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing your jacket in a damp or humid environment, as this can cause mould to grow.

If your jacket starts to look dull or loses its waterproofing qualities you can reproof it.

With proper care, your oilskin jacket will keep you warm and dry for many years to come.

1 review for All-Weather Oilskin Alpine Jacket

I Love my Oilskin Jacket! It is comfy, has a lot of pockets and is water and wind proof. I keep mine at the bottom of the stairs, ready to wear when heading out into the veld. I Love brown color which does not show dirt easily, brush also does not sit on it. I have had my jacket for about 2 years now and it has developed a beautiful patina. There is an oil smell to the jacket and I don’t recommend hanging it in the closet right next to your other clothes to avoid oil getting transferred to your clothing.
