How to Replace Your Oilskin Snap Buttons: A Step-by-Step Guide

Replacing a snap button is straightforward, but it requires solid pressure to flare the metal post and lock the pieces together permanently.

What You’ll Need:

  • The TrailWear Replacement Button Set

  • The TrailWear Snap Setting Tool

  • A Rubber hammer

  • A solid, flat surface (a sturdy workbench, anvil, or concrete floor—avoid flimsy tables or counters that bounce)

1.Prep the Fabric: Step 1.

If you are replacing a clean tear-out, check the existing hole. If you are placing a button in a new spot, use a leather punch or a thick nail to pierce a small, clean hole just large enough for the button post to slide through.

2.Assemble the Cap: Step 2.

Push the smooth, rounded outer cap post through the outside of the jacket fabric to the inside. Slide the female socket piece over the exposed post on the inside of the fabric.

3.Set the Cap: Step 3.

Place the rounded cap face-down into the curved recess of the tool’s base (the anvil). Insert the pointed setting punch into the center of the inner socket post. Hold the punch perfectly vertical and strike it firmly with your hammer 2–3 times until the inner post flares out and locks the socket tightly against the fabric.

Pro Tip: Always do a quick test click before packing your tools away to ensure the male and female halves line up perfectly and snap together tightly!
