Stetson – Boss of the Plains

Created in the 1860s by our founder John B. Stetson on a trip out West seeking open skies and new frontiers, The Boss of the Plains is the hat that started it all. In keeping with its unparalleled heritage, each Boss of the Plains is made the old-fashioned way, dyed and shaped and distressed entirely by hand. This results in a hat that is truly one of a kind, with its own unique color, shape and level of distressing. (Note: As a result of this time-honored process, your hat may vary in color from the versions shown in the image gallery.)

Each Boss of the Plains is crafted from high-quality 6X fur felt for a lifetime of wear, with a signature leather hat band, interior leather sweatband, and satin lining. With its unmistakable profile and signature distressed patina, the Boss of the Plains may be our most iconic hat—the ultimate marriage of form and function.

  • NOTE: The Boss of The Plains is handcrafted, hand-dyed and hand-distressed. That means no two hats have the same color or character, making each hat truly one of a kind. It’s then finished with a leather hat band, unique to each hat. • Heritage & craftsmanship – every hat is built to last.

  • Iconic style – hats worn by ranchers, outlaws, musicians, and movie stars alike.

When you wear a Stetson, you’re not just buying a hat—you’re carrying a piece of history.

Stetson Hat Sizing & Care Guide

When investing in a Stetson hat—whether it’s felt, straw, or leather—getting the right size and knowing how to care for it will keep your hat looking sharp for years. Below is a complete guide to help you choose the perfect fit, understand Stetson’s legacy, and maintain your hat properly.

How to Measure Your Hat Size

Choosing the right size is the first step to comfort and style. Don’t guess—use this simple method to measure your head:

  1. Get a soft measuring tape.

  2. Place it 2–3 cm above your ear (where your hat would naturally sit).

  3. Wrap the tape around your head, keeping it level and firm but not tight.

  4. Check the measurement in centimeters.

  5. Use our Stetson Hat Size Chart to find your perfect size.

Pro tip: If you’re between sizes, always size up. A slightly larger hat can be adjusted with hat sizing tape, while a smaller hat will be uncomfortable and cause headaches.

How to Care for Your Stetson Hat

Whether it’s felt, leather, or straw, a little care goes a long way.

Felt Hat Care

  • Handling: Always hold your hat by the crown base (where crown meets brim), not the top or brim.

  • Heat: Avoid leaving your hat in hot cars or near stoves—heat shrinks the sweatband.

  • Storage: Store upside down on the crown, or in a hat box, to preserve brim shape.

  • Cleaning: Use a brim brush or sponge to remove dust. For stains, use a hat cleaning spray, allow to dry, and brush again.

Straw Hat Care

  • Storage: Always store brim-up to prevent flattening.

  • Moisture: Keep dry—water can warp straw hats.

  • Cleaning: Wipe gently with a damp cloth for dust, or use a mild soap for spots.

Leather Hat Care

  • Conditioning: Apply a leather conditioner every few months to prevent drying or cracking.

  • Cleaning: Wipe with a damp cloth; avoid harsh soaps.

  • Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
