Finding Your Perfect Fit 🧥

Our oilskin coats are designed with a “Relaxed Country Fit.” Unlike a standard fashion jacket, these coats are built with extra “Ease” (wiggle room) to ensure you remain fully mobile while working or exploring—even when wearing thick layers.

How to Choose Your Size:

  • Check your Body Measurement: Use a tape measure around the widest part of your chest. Match this to the “To Fit Chest” column in our chart.

  • The Liner Factor: Our sizing already accounts for the extra bulk of our clip-in liners. If you plan to use a liner and a heavy wool jersey, stick to your measured size.

  • Prefer a Slimmer Fit? If you only plan to wear light clothing underneath and do not intend to use a liner or layers, you may want to consider sizing down.

Why is the “Actual Coat” measurement so much larger?

To allow for unrestricted arm movement and the addition of seasonal liners, our coats typically measure 15cm to 20cm larger than your actual body measurement. This “Ease” prevents the heavy oilskin canvas from binding or pulling across your shoulders.

💡 Pro Tip: Oilskin does not stretch. If you are between sizes, we recommend choosing the larger size. A coat that is too tight can be restricting and uncomfortable.

How to Measure for the Best Results 📏

  • The Chest: Measure under your arms around the fullest part of your chest. Keep the tape level and don’t pull it too tight.

  • Compare to your favorite coat: If you’re still unsure, lay your favorite winter coat flat and measure from armpit to armpit. Multiply by two and compare it to our “Actual Coat Measurement” column.

Washing & Care Advice 🧼

Oilskin jackets are a fantastic way to stay warm and dry in wet and windy weather. Caring for your oilskin properly will keep it in good condition for years to come.

Daily Maintenance & Cleaning

  • Brush it off: If your jacket gets dirty, brush it off with a stiff brush or sponge.

  • Cold Water Only: Don’t wash your jacket/coat with hot water or detergent. This will remove the oils and waxes that make your jacket waterproof.

  • Spot Cleaning: Spot-clean your jacket with a damp cloth or sponge.

  • Deep Clean: If your jacket is really dirty, you can rinse it in a tub of cold water or hose it off outside while hanging.

Drying & Storage

  • Air Dry: If your jacket gets wet, hang it up to dry as soon as possible. Air dry your item; do not wring it out or put it in the dryer. 💨

  • Storage: Store your jacket in a cool, dry place. Avoid damp or humid environments, as this can cause mould to grow.

Important Notes

  • Detergent Warning: If you choose to wash it with detergent, rinse your jacket thoroughly and be aware that you will now need to reproof your jacket.

  • Reproofing: If your jacket starts to look dull or loses its waterproofing qualities, you can reproof it to restore its performance.

With proper care, your oilskin jacket will keep you warm and dry for many years to come!
