For the ride. For the dream. For the long haul.
A good felt hat isn’t just a statement — it’s part of your story. Whether it’s been through dust storms, long rides, or just Sunday strolls through town, looking after it means it’ll ride with you for years to come. Here’s how to keep it in shape — no fuss, no filters.
1. Regular Cleaning
Dust and dirt are part of the ride — but they don’t need to stay.
-
Brush it down: Use a soft-bristled hat brush (dark for dark hats, light for light hats). Always brush in one direction (no zig-zag brushing – this will cause damage)
-
Lint or hair? A bit of masking tape or a lint roller will do the trick.
2. Spot Cleaning
For the stubborn marks.
-
Dry stains: Try something a bit harder like a rougher brush.
-
Grease or sweat stains: Try lighter fluid on a cloth. (test on a small area first)
3. Steaming & Reshaping
Life happens. So do dents.
-
Hold your hat above a pot of boiling water or use a clothing steamer.
-
Once soft, gently shape with your hands.
-
Let it dry naturally upside down on its crown on a table (not flat on the brim — that will flatten the brim and have some of your good work go to waste).
4. Stiffening (If Needed)
Lost some structure? Bring back that crisp western shape.
-
Use a hat stiffener spray (available in-store or online).
-
Lightly mist, shape as needed, and let dry completely.
- If you don’t have stiffener you can also lightly spray your hat with rubbing alcohol (the good stuff of 90% +). This will reactivate the stiffener already in your hat (don’t over do it with this stuff though, we don’t want to fully dissolve the stiffener in your hat)
5. Storage Tips
Treat it like gear, not clutter.
-
Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
-
Use a hat box or put it brim up on a table.
-
Do not store in a airtight bag (this can cause moisture buildup and molding)
-
Some hat hooks can misshape the crown if left there for prolonged periods of time and regularly, so just keep an eye out of storing on a hat hook.
The right hat should ride with you through thick and thin — and a little care goes a long way.
